Construction site on permafrost in Nunavik with a foundation adapted to the northern climate

05 — Our expertise

Northern works

Northern construction in Nunavik demands dedicated northern engineering: building on permafrost, adapted foundations, thermosiphons and permafrost instrumentation, from Nord-du-Québec to Labrador.

Work carried out in the Far North demands a deep understanding of permafrost, climate conditions, logistics and the realities of remote communities. Construction & Expertise PG has more than 20 years of experience in northern work in Nunavik, Nord-du-Québec and Labrador.

Our team has completed over a hundred soil studies in 15 coastal villages of Nunavik. This knowledge of the territory allows us to design solutions adapted to permafrost conditions and to the changes observed in soil behaviour. We work on foundation design, underpinning and the assessment of existing structures.

PG also has expertise in thermosiphon analysis, water intake structure design, and the instrumentation and monitoring of buildings constructed on permafrost. This monitoring detects movement, thermal variations and signs of deterioration that could affect a structure's stability.

We also provide quality control services for concrete, reinforcing steel, steel structures and roofing systems. From logistics planning to construction, our team coordinates the resources, materials and equipment needed to work effectively in the most demanding northern environments.

Frequently asked questions

How do you build a permafrost foundation without thawing?+

By isolating the ground from the building: ventilated crawl space, raft on a thick granular pad or piles, often combined with thermosiphons that extract heat in winter and keep the permafrost frozen.

Do you carry out soil studies in Nunavik?+

Yes. Boreholes, ice-content logging, geotechnical testing and permafrost instrumentation (thermistor strings) size Far North construction and monitor its behaviour.

How do you manage logistics in northern villages?+

Materials are planned around the annual sealift and air transport; our crews are self-sufficient in lodging, equipment and spare parts for the duration of the mandate.

Can you fix an existing building that is settling?+

Yes. Underpinning, re-levelling and added thermosiphons or insulation stabilize a building affected by permafrost thaw in Nunavik or Labrador.
